Video game sets a new world record

Most world records associated with gaming are for long game play (see: Asteroids record), but one game will be honored for how well it was featured.

"Assassin's Creed II" (Ubisoft) picked up the Guinness World Record for most covered-featured video game. The action-adventure game was used as a lead cover story on 127 different publications in 32 countries, between April 2009 and April 2010.

In the United Kingdom alone, the massive press campaign for "Assassin’s Creed II" achieved 17 front covers, over 340 pages of specialist press coverage and 14 review awards. Guinness officials were surprised by the reach of the game.

"I’m sure plenty of commentators, including myself, would have predicted another well-known game winning the title instead, and this achievement is even more impressive in view of the other 2009 releases that 'Assassin’s Creed II' was able to beat," Gaz Deaves, Editor of "Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition," said.

Deaves said they initially thought a classic arcade game would have been the record-holder (i.e. – "Pac-Man", "Space Invaders") because they've been around for far longer. But, he said, few magazines took an interest in gaming when those games were big.

After examining more recent titles, including "Grand Theft Auto IV", "Modern Warfare 2", and "Halo 3", Deaves and his team verified "Assassin's Creed II" as the winner.

Ubisoft spokeswoman Lisa Revelli said many journalists worldwide made requests to have the game featured on their front covers. Revelli said "Assassin's Creed II" has sold 9 million units worldwide since its release in November 2009.

The record will be shortlisted for entry in the next edition of Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition.

Killer was obsessed by violent video game

Warren LeBlanc, 17, lured Stefan Pakeerah, 14, to his death by telling him that they were going to meet some girls. But once in Stoke Wood Park, Leicester, LeBlanc — described as an “exemplary pupil” by a former headmistress — struck his friend from behind with a claw hammer he had hidden in a bag.

He stabbed him in the neck and side before dragging him into the bushes and stabbing him again. He then stripped the victim.

When police searched LeBlanc’s home they found the controversial PlayStation 2 computer game Manhunt.

The 18-rated game, which is banned in New Zealand, features a “hero” who wins points for murdering people before they can murder him — with more horrific deaths earning a higher score. The graphics show blood splattering from people as they are attacked. Ther game also features decapitation and brutal stabbings.

Last night, as the killer faced life behind bars, Stefan’s father Patrick, 41, a civil servant, said: “Stefan’s murder compares to how the game is set out, using weapons like hammers and knives. The object of Manhunt is not to just to go out and kill people. It’s a point-scoring game where you increase your score depending on how violent the killing is.

“That explains why Stefan’s murder was as horrific as it was . . . the violence can most certainly be attributed to that game and if games like this influence kids they should be taken off the shelves.”

His mother, Giselle, 36, added: “Stefan’s friends say Warren was obsessed with this game . . . it could well be that the boundaries between fantasy and reality became quite hazy.”

Leicester Crown Court was told that LeBlanc told police: “Everything went black. I didn’t intend to kill him at first, but when I saw the blood I just let go and hit more times.”

Judge Michael Stokes, QC, told LeBlanc, of Braunstone Frith, Leicester, that pending further reports, he would be detained for life.

Superintendent Bob Small, of Leicestershire police, who led the investigation into Stefan’s death, said: “We do not believe the game is directly connected with the motive. But in any inquiry we keep an open mind as to what the motive can be.”

Manhunt, described by its promoters as a “sado-masochistic” game, was banned six months ago in New Zealand by censorship officials.

Jack Thompson, a lawyer who is campaigning against the sale of violent video games to children, said that he had written to its producers warning that there would be copycat attacks.

He said there was evidence to suggest that teenagers playing such games had difficulty distinguishing between the fantasy and reality.

Mr Thompson, speaking from Miami, Florida, said: “We have had dozens of killings in the US by children who had played these types of games. This is not an isolated incident. We have got to stop selling them to children because there is hard science — brain scan studies — that show that the games are processed in a different part of the brain in an adolescent than in an adult.”

The Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers’ Association said: “We sympathise enormously with the family and parents of Stefan Pakeerah. However, we reject any suggestion or association between the tragic events in the Midlands and the sale of the video game Manhunt.

“The game in question is classified 18 by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) and therefore should not be in the possession of a juvenile.”

Hewitt backs mother of dead boy over video game violence

The Trade and Industry Secretary said today that age restrictions on computer games are not enough to protect teenagers from extreme violence, after one title was blamed for the killing of a boy by his schoolmate.

Patricia Hewitt's comments came after Dixons, Currys and PC World and the retailer Game pulled Manhunt from their shelves today when the parents of Stefan Pakeerah, 14, said that their son's killer had been obsessed with the game and appeared to have copied it.

Warren LeBlanc, 17, lured Stefan to his death by telling him that they were going to meet some girls in Stoke Wood Park, Leicester.

But once there, LeBlanc, who was described as an exemplary pupil by a former headmistress, struck his friend from behind with a claw hammer, stabbed him in the neck and side and then dragged him into the bushes and stabbed him again. He then stripped the victim. LeBLanc was detained for life yesterday.

Manhunt, made by Rockstar Games for Sony PlayStation, Microsoft's Xbox and the PC platform, is rated 18 but is banned in New Zealand.

It features a "hero" who wins points for murdering people before they can murder him - with more horrific deaths earning higher scores. The game features decapitations and brutal stabbings.

Ms Hewitt, who is also the MP for Leicester West, said that she had been keeping an eye on the case for some time as Stefan's mother was one of her constituents.

She said: "I have kept in close touch with Giselle Pakeerah since the brutal murder of her son Stefan and my deepest sympathies are with her and her family.

"Although it would be wrong to comment on the details of the case still before the court, as a mother myself I share her anxiety about the violent computer games that too many teenagers are exposed to.

"It is illegal for retailers to sell these games to under 18s, but we all need to do more - manufacturers, retailers, parents and schools - to protect our young people from immersing themselves in images of extreme violence."

The penalty for retailers selling an age restricted videos to those underage is a £5,000 and up to six months imprisonment.

Stefan's father Patrick, 41, a civil servant, said yesterday: "Stefan's murder compares to how the game is set out, using weapons like hammers and knives. The object of Manhunt is not to just to go out and kill people. It's a point-scoring game where you increase your score depending on how violent the killing is.

Do video games make you violent?

The murder of Stefan Pakeerah by a youth said to enjoy playing violent video games has focused attention once again on the effects of such entertainment.

Experts are divided on whether bloodthirsty role-playing games like Manhunt, Doom and Mortal Combat can make the people who play them more aggressive.

Psychologists in the United States, like Dr Craig Anderson of Iowa State University, are convinced that they can.

Dr Anderson carried out two studies, each involving just over 200 college students, and says he found that aggressive young men who did badly at college were particularly susceptible to violent games. Levels of aggression were raised after only a few minutes' playing, he said.

He believes that violent video games may be more harmful than violent films because they are interactive, and require the player to identify with the aggressive character.

"We found that students who reported playing more violent video games in junior and high school engaged in more aggressive behaviour," said .

"We also found that amount of time spent playing video games in the past was associated with lower academic grades in college."

But British experts are more sceptical of the claimed link. Dr Guy Cumberbatch of Birmingham University, who recently reviewed all the academic research on the subject on behalf of the Video Standards Council, said Dr Anderson was confusing cause and effect.

"Dr Anderson is one of the more recent academic Mary Whitehouses, who is quite convinced that violence in video games amplifies violence in society," he said.

"But the evidence is really quite questionable. A lot of it is based on college students pressing 'hurt' or 'help' buttons. The effect is very, very small, and to do with how people behave in laboratories rather than in society."

The only firm thing that could be concluded was that aggressive people who already had underlying violent tendencies tended to enjoy playing violent games, said Dr Cumberbatch.

If such people wanted to seek out violent images which would confirm that killing and hurting people was normal in society, they only had to read a newspaper or watch the television news, he said. He also poured scorn on the idea that teenagers could not tell the difference between a game and reality.

Manhunt, the game at the centre of the latest furore, requires players to identify with a scruffy anti-hero released from jail, who has to kill everyone who crosses his path in order to stay free. He gains credit for killing opponents in a more violent way.

The game was rated 18 by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) - one of only seven games to receive an adult certificate in Britain last year. Manhunt was banned altogether by the New Zealand Office of Film and Literature Classification last December. It is available without restriction everywhere else in the world.

Sue Clark, the BBFC head of communications, said that it was the victim's parents who were drawing the link between Stefan's death and the video game his killer played, not the police or the prosecutors. No such claim was made in court.

"It is a completely understandable reaction for them to want to find something to blame," Ms Clark said.

"I would probably do the same myself. But there is nothing here for the BBFC to defend. This game has not been officially implicated in this case. There is no good evidence showing a direct link between playing violent video games and carrying out violent actions."

Modern Warfare 2 - the 'shocking' video game poised to smash records

A new video game that gives players the option to kill civilians in a terrorist attack is poised to become the single most lucrative release in the history of entertainment when it goes on sale on Tuesday.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the latest in a series of ultra-realistic first-person war games, the last of which won a Bafta earlier this year for its story and character development. In the course of the ten hours or so the game will take to complete in solo mode, the player will assume a variety of roles in a global war against Russian ultranationalists led by Vladimir Makarov.

Like many war-themed titles, the game – set five years in the future - features bloody conflict throughout, but Modern Warfare 2 is so harrowingly realistic at some points that an on-screen warning offers players the option to skip scenes they may find disturbing.

One of the most controversial of these is an episode where your character must choose whether to kill unarmed civilians in a Russian airport in order to infiltrate a terrorist sect successfully. The scene is so genuinely shocking in its brutality that the game’s distributor Activision has already attempted to forestall criticism by issuing the following statement.

"The scene establishes the depth of evil and the cold-bloodedness of a rogue Russian villain and his unit. By establishing that evil, it adds to the urgency of the player's mission to stop them.

"Modern Warfare 2 is a fantasy action game designed for intense, realistic game play that mirrors real life conflicts, much like epic, action movies. It is appropriately rated 18 for violent scenes, which means it is intended for those who are 18 and older."

Critics of the game, though, accuse Activision of being disingenuous. Warnings of extreme content, they say, are like a red rag to a bull, and have a particularly strong appeal to younger players who are more likely to be affected by the action they see onscreen.

Keith Vaz, MP, a long-time critic of violence in video games, told The Times: “I am absolutely shocked by the level of violence in this game and am particularly concerned about how realistic the game itself looks.

“Whilst I appreciate that this game has been certified as an 18, I firmly believe that certain levels of violence should not be made into interactive entertainment. This would include acting as a terrorist, as is the case here, or violence against women. I will be raising this issue in Parliament on Monday.”

The last game to generate similar controversy was Grand Theft Auto IV, released in April, 2008, in which players steal cars and murder their way to the top of the big-city underworld.

On release, GTA IV broke all records for an entertainment product, grossing $300 million in its first 24 hours on sale, nearly three times as much as the movie blockbuster Iron Man, which was released the following month.

Retailers in the UK claim that Modern Warfare 2 is already on target to break this record, despite Activision having added £10 to the standard retail price for similar games. The high-street specialist chain GAME is opening 320 of its stores on midnight on Monday to cope with expected demand.

Stuart Rowe, Chief Operating Officer of the online retailer, Play.com, told The Times: "Modern Warfare 2 will undoubtedly become the most popular video game of all time. The demand has been unprecedented, pre-sales of the game have already overtaken all previous records set across our broad range of product categories."

On Monday evening, Amazon confirmed that Modern Warfare 2 will be its biggest selling video game yet, with advance orders running 50 per cent higher than for GTA IV.

Call of Duty creators go to war over bestselling game

Players of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 know the script only too well. An epic battle is being waged. A few men are fighting against a powerful enemy. But even with the odds against them, they could yet pull off a stunning coup.

But now war has broken out at Activision Blizzard, the makers of Modern Warfare 2, the most successful video game in history, after the men who created the title acrimoniously left the company.

Yesterday, it emerged that several other key employees behind the game had also walked out, leaving the fate of the franchise in the balance.

On Monday, Jason West and Vince Zampella, the men credited with creating the title, announced that they had formed a new studio called Respawn Entertainment, in partnership with Electronic Arts. The pair were senior executives at Activision’s Infinity Ward, the California-based group that has made the Call of Duty games.

Mr West and Mr Zampella walked out on the company nearly a month ago. They have been accused of mutiny by Activision for negotiating to work with other makers. Activision and the two men are now suing each other, with ownership over the Call of Duty franchise believed to be on the line.

In a legal document, Activision said that Mr West and Mr Zampella had “morphed from valued, responsible executives into insubordinate and self-serving schemers”. The two described the claims as “false and outrageous”.

Analysts said that nine other employees had left Infinity Ward in the past week, apparently disgruntled at the treatment of the creators. The game was believed to have about 90 employees before the walkouts.

The game puts players in the position of special forces soldiers in fictional modern-day conflicts across the Middle East and former Soviet states. Modern Warfare 2, the fourth game of the popular series, has sold 18 million copies worldwide since November last year, according to VGChartz, the games industry website. Global first-day sales exceeded $500 million (£323 million).

Evan Wilson, an industry analyst with Pacific Crest Securities, said: “Investors are starting to think that Activision really ticked off the whole studio.”

Industry observers said that Activision remained in a strong position. It also owns two other major games franchises, World of Warcraft and Guitar Hero. However, the company’s stock price has fallen more than 7.5 per cent this week.

Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom: Befriending the Beast

The art style of Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom immediately appealed to me. Sure, the dynamic between the limber young hero and the gentle giant has been done before, but there was something about the majin's face that I took an instant liking to. Perhaps it was his small, innocent eyes, or his oversized jaw, but I wanted to see this game in action. I had a chance to do so when publisher Namco Bandai demoed the game for me last week.

Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom, developed by Japanese studio Game Republic, follows a nameless young thief and his journey into -- appropriately -- a forsaken kingdom. Long ago, a cloak of darkness spread over this kingdom and engulfed its inhabitants, leaving the area of the world eerily vacant. Those that attempted exploration never returned, and eventually the land was avoided and forgotten.

The adventure at hand was described to me as a mix between Legend of Zelda and Prince of Persia. The gameplay is a combination of traditional platforming, puzzle solving and open-world exploration. Players take control of the thief as he journeys into the forsaken kingdom and stumbles upon a sleeping giant. The term "majin" in Japanese can mean a number of things, like "demon god" or "genie." But the majin that our hero encounters is far from demonic. Whimpering in his sleep about a full tummy, he wakes to the sounds of the hero approaching and suddenly exclaims that he is hungry and needs to consume the fruit in which his stolen power is stored. With one hand pinned to the ground, there's little he can do on his own, so our hero volunteers to help.

Although the hero boasts a fairly interesting design (considering his stylish cloak and large eyes), the real star of the show is the majin. With a large frame and a variety of plants growing on his back, this creature embodies the "one with nature" motif beautifully, and I sincerely hope that his childish demeanor is properly developed during the game's adventure.

At the start of the demonstration, the hero moved through the dungeon-like maze in which the majin is being held and snuck past a few shadowy guards. The hero is not one for combat, as his strength lies in his swiftness and dexterity. The hero snuck towards the fruit by throwing rocks at the enemies in order to draw them away. Once the fruit was in his possession, he returned it to the majin and the charming creature regained his strength. The inky darkness that was previously coating the majin's limb disappeared and the hero pulled a giant pin from the majin's arm, freeing the creature and acquiring a new weapon in the process.

The majin, grateful for the assistance, agrees to help the hero escape from the dungeon. It is here that the primary gameplay components emerge, as players must issue orders to the majin in order to successfully traverse the in-game environments. Point to anything in the game and you can order the majin to interact with it. For example, during the demonstration there were many massive gates that the majin could open for the hero. Also, when the hero encountered a number of enemies standing underneath a loose chunk of rock, he lured them close and signaled the majin to push the stone onto the enemies below.

When enemies are defeated, they release an orb of darkness that hovers over their body. If the hero is alone, he'll be unable to finish off the enemies because he'll have no means of dispatching that orb -- the enemies' source of power. But with majin in tow, the hero need only incapacitate the enemies, because the majin will then absorb that dark power as his own, which can be used to heal himself or the hero, as well as upgrade his own abilities.

The puzzles players will find won't be explained directly. Things start out simple, but eventually players must find their own way around the world and think of solutions that are only hinted at by friendly animals. Yes, our hero can converse with nearby critters, which perhaps explains his ability to communicate with the majin. Towards the end of the demo, the hero uncovers an abandoned trebuchet, which the majin can pull down so the hero can climb into the basket in order to be hurled over a wall.

All this exploration and shadow slaying is well and good, but my absolute favorite part of the demo was during a cutscene, when the majin, revealing his name to be Teotl, names the hero Tepeu. After this exchange, Tepeu sees a glimpse of Teotl's past because the pin he carries retained some of Teotl's power. This flashback was told with 2D silhouettes and it made me instantly interested in Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom's story. In the flashback, Teotl is guarding a sword-wielding girl from a number of shadowy creatures. Teotl is bleeding badly and the girl insists that he rests, but he continues to fight the waves of enemies until the flashback ends. This leads the player to ask a number of questions. How long ago did these events unfold? Who is the girl in the memory, and why is Teotl protecting her? I can't wait to find out.

For me, the art style and story of Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom is even more intriguing than the base gameplay. From what I saw during my demonstration, the initial platforming and puzzle solving is fairly unoriginal, but the real excitement should come from uncovering more details regarding Teotl and his past. And considering Majin is supposed to be a 30 hour adventure, there should be plenty to discover.

Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom is scheduled to launch this summer for the PS3 and 360. Let's keep our fingers crossed that the gameplay is just as intriguing as the aesthetics built around it.

Tips Sukses Bermain Cafe World

* Jika makanan sudah mau habis, masak dulu, lalu log off.

Yakuza 4: Heir to the Legend

The Yakuza games always centered on the (now) legendary ass kicker, Kazuma Kiryu. But, since he's hanging out in Okinawa, and this game takes place in Kamurocho (which is actually just a video game version of one of Tokyo's biggest organized crime hot spots, Shinjuku), we have to play as some other characters for a while. These new faces include: Shun Akiyama, a hostess bar owning money-lender who sticks his hands in just about everyone's business; Taiga Saejima, an ex-Yakuza who was sent to jail for killing 18 members of an affiliated Yakuza group in broad daylight; and finally Masayoshi Tanimura, a young cop with a gambling problem and a less-than-ethical outlook on how to deal out the law. The game begins with you playing as Akiyama (the money lender), and for the first six hours or so (and maybe more), you don't even see or hear a peep out of the previous games' main protagonist. Then again, Akiyama so far is so charming and brutal, that you soon forget there even is a "Kazuma Kiryu." Much like the other Yakuza games, the story is extremely engaging, the characters human and believable, and you find yourself constantly wanting to jump into the next story element.

And just like the other Yakuza games, you also find yourself wanting to just sit in the arcade playing crane games for an hour. Yes, mini games and side quests are in full effect in Yakuza 4. This time the developers have added a full on golf game to the ever-growing roster of distractions. Alas, as someone who actually likes golf games, I found the controls unresponsive ("I pressed Circle, dammit!") and the game in general really just boring. Besides, why do I want to go out golfing, when I could be learning more about this awesome and intricate crime mystery?

I have to say, even though I'm still early on in the game, I'm quite hooked. Just reading the character bios in the instruction manual as reference for this article made me want to go back so I could see what happens next. It?s not every day you find a game with characters as interesting as these. For those not wanting to wait on the next Sega e-mail campaign, the game is extremely text heavy, so importers beware. Though, you might not have much of a choice in the end. Yakuza 4 currently has not been announced for release anywhere outside of Japan, but if Yakuza 3 sells, well, you never know! Check out some more videos in the meantime.

Mafia Wars

Mafia Wars is a multiplayer browser game created by Zynga. It was the 2009 Webby Award People's Voice Winner in the Games category. It is on several social networking sites and on the iPhone.Mafia Wars is available on Facebook, MySpace, Tagged, Sonico, and Yahoo!. On April 8, 2009, Zynga released a version of the game as a free downloadable iPhone App.

On Facebook, as of October 2009, Mafia Wars has 25.9 million monthly active accounts. Some players and clans create multiple accounts to utilize the benefits of the three basic character builds ( Fearless, Maniac, and Mogul).

Mafia Wars is set in New York City and Little Italy, with the option for players to travel between New York, Cuba (level 35+), Moscow (level 70+) and Bangkok (upon unlocking items from New York levels, level 18+), and in 2010, Las Vegas. The game revolves around doing and mastering jobs to earn cash and experience, with the goal of establishing and advancing one's criminal empire.[5] Players create mafias by recruiting players and using reward points to hire extra mafia members. Social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Friendster allow players to recruit from friends to build their mafia and fight against other players.Players can also improve their stats by visiting the Godfather (ie, making a micropayment).

Gameplay revolves around timers: players have limited energy (for doing jobs), and health and stamina meters (for fighting other players), in a manner similar to an RPG game, which slowly recharges over time. With the help of other mafia members that have been recruited, players can eventually fight other players, which may or may not result in the theft of cash, "icing", or "death" of the other player. The game operates on a level up basis. The player earns experience points by completing jobs. Players who manage to complete special tasks (for example, winning fights against bigger mafias or winning fifteen fights in a row) are labeled as having accomplished an "achievement", resulting in a bonus for the player. As they level up, more jobs and features become available, such as the ability to visit Cuba to expand their criminal empire.

After a significant in-game marketing blitz, Zynga added a new city, Moscow, on September 24, 2009. Once a player reaches level 70, they are granted access to Moscow, and they get to choose between the Thieves in Law Vory or the Russian Mafiya. On January 20, 2010, Bangkok Beta was released with some players being granted acess to it, but some not. This is to prevent too many people from going to Bangkok which may cause the system to crash. In Bangkok, players will be able to choose from the Triad and the Yakuza. One upcoming region is Las Vegas, coming out in an unknown exact date in 2010. The ranks and episodes are: Street Thug, Associate, Soldier, Enforcer, Hitman, Capo, Consigliere, Underboss, and Boss in New York; El Soldado, El Capitan, El Jefe, El Patron, El Padrino, and El Cacique in Cuba; Baklany, Boets, Brigadir, Avtoritet, Vor, and Pakhan in Moscow; Brawler, Criminal, Pirate, Commandant, Oyabun and Dragon Head in Bangkok.

Character Classes

There are three classes that a player has to choose from when they first start the game. Each class offers a reduced amount of recharge time to one of the three timers. The three classes are:

Maniac: This class has an energy recharge timer of three minutes, unlike the other two classes which have a timer of five minutes. Also the Buttonman position is only available for Maniacs

Mogul: This class gets 5% more money from jobs in all cities. Also, the Top Mafia Bagman position is only for Moguls.

Fearless: This class receives a stamina recharge time reduction (every 3 minutes as opposed to the usual 5). Also, only Fearless players can be a Wheelman in a person's Top Mafia

Character class can be changed by the user by buying a preferred class for 15 Godfather points.
